Endless Paperwork!

February 13, 2010
So, we are in the process of renewing our visas.  David's is done (thankfully) as they were willing to get his done without quite all of the paperwork needed for the family.  We have had to collect a number of random items for this including letters from the school for each child and a form signed by the landlord which states the measurements of every room in the house (goodness knows why).  I returned to the Auslanderamt Tuesday thinking I had everything I needed.  Alas, no.  The form with the room measurements needs a stamp from the rathaus here in Eppelheim (again, goodness knows why--or why they did not tell us this in the first place; sometimes I think they make up the rules as they go) and now we need Dave's January paystub since for his visa the last four were Sept. through Dec. but now the last four will be Oct. through Jan.  Sigh, seriously?  So,Thursday I got in to the Rathaus only to find the person with the stamp is out sick (why someone else cannot stamp it I do not know!).  I'll try again Monday.  It always boggles my mind how Germans can be so remarkable effeceint at almost everything and so terribly inefficeint at government paperwork--sometimes I think it is a good thing that I cannot work in Germany as how on earth else would we have the time to keep up with the forms.

Girl Scouts!!!!

February 7, 2010

One thing we have had a hard time finding here in Germany has been a Girl Scout troop for Marika.  Marika loves scouts and truly wanted to keep up with it here in Germany.  I knew there were troops on base, and that non millitary girls could join, but we had no luck finding these troops and getting her involved.  Several times we sent an email from the link on the website for the Heidelberg Girl Scouts, but these emails were never answered.  I suspected that they were not going through for so...

The Package Stand

February 4, 2010

I had another little adventure today. It started when I got home yesterday to find an "attempted delivery" card in the mailbox.  Seems a small package was waiting for us.  So, being the smart girl I am, I took the card and grabbed my passport in case ID was needed and walked over to the post office this afternoon.  As soon as I stepped toward the counter I was told that "green card" packages are picked up at the "Package Stand."  I asked where that is and an address was written down for me.  ...

Wishing for Spring

February 3, 2010
It's funny, I am usually very excited for the snow and generally able to make it until at least March before I am pining for spring to come.  This year I am READY for spring.  My tolorence for winter seems to have gone way down.  I think this may be partly due to the lack of snow here in Heidelberg.  3-4 inches (feels weird saying "inches") of snow is a lot for this area.  That means we don't get the joy of playing in the white and cold stuff.  We also periodically (like today) get days with ...

Not too cool

February 2, 2010
Have you ever noticed that if you drive through town in the after school hours this time of year you will inevitably pass a few teens dressed as if it is still summer?  There are a few  kids who simply refuse to close a jacket even when the mercury falls well below freezing, but there are always one or two "too cool to be cold" ones wandering around in shorts and flip flops.  Marika and I have noticed that this phenomenon does not seem to exist in Germany.  Every morning in the tram the teens...

1Year

February 1, 2010
Well yesterday marks one year since we landed in Frankfurt to live here.  We celebrated with chocolate chip cookie bars and tres lehes cake.  Yummy.  We all agree that for the msot part Germany is home now and we really like it here.  Marika still misses her friends in New Hampshire and the trees and snow we had and I am struggling with the langauge bog time at the moment--but overall there are more postives than negatives.  I try to imaigne myself living in the US again and I hoenstly can't ...

Crazy sick kids

January 20, 2010
Well I can't say much about Germany today.  Between Sunday and yesterday (Tuesday) I have managed to visit the kinderklinik twice (once for the ER with Rio on Sunday as mentioned in my last post) and once for Marika to have a chest x-ray yesterday, the pediatrician 3 times and the pharmacy 4 times!  There are a lot of weeks when David is not using the car and the only time I pull it out of the garage is to pick him up at the airport.  This week I am grateful to have the car to transport the s...

Visiting the ER in Germany

January 17, 2010
Well, today we had the never pleasant experience of our first emergency room visit to Germany.  Sigh.  Rio's asthma is giving him trouble again.  Today his peak flow fell lwoer than it ever has and faster too.  This was shortly AFTER he used his inhaler--which clearly did not do a thing to help in this instance.  So, off we set for the "Kinder Klink."  One great thing about living in Heidelberg is that we have an excellent (and HUGE) hodpital owned by the university.  This includes a full, se...

peace and quiet and freedom

October 21, 2009
Okay, so I have learned tonight that if I keep trying for about 20 minutes I do eventually get in to edit the blog!

There are two things I have been particularly wanting to write about.  The first is how much quieter it is here.  About a week ago the children and I were driving to school and someone was laying on their horn.  We had not heard that sound since we arrived in Germany and all found it very jarring.  It got me to thinking about all the subtle things that are less noisy here:
  Car h...

Heidelberg by Night

September 18, 2009
I HAVE been trying to post--but the server keeps freezing up whenever I try, so sorry for the long delay.
Dave was actually working in Weinheim this week, so we were not doing our usual Friday night airport run tonight.  Once we put the kids to bed, we took advantage of the calm night and lovely weather and took the tram down to Bismark Platz.  It is so pleasant being down in the pedestrian distrcit at night!  There is a distinctly different feel.  There are still enough people to feel like ...
